Book review by Dr Walter Liese In this book Oscar Hidalgo, the well-known expert for bamboo in Latin-America, presents a life-time experience with the use of bamboo in many fields. It is a collection of more than 40 years devoted occupation with bamboo, mainly Guadua, the main species of his homeland Colombia, and based on practical work in Latin-American countries, as well as the results of an extensive search of the literature and his friendly contacts with colleagues in many parts of the world. The purpose is simply stated as ‘to contribute to the technical and scientific study of our native giant bamboo species, to the development of many industries related to the manufacture of composite materials, and the development of new types of structures, in Colombia and the other countries of the Americas where this marvelous plant can grow’ However, this conceals a most impressive accumulation of information on all aspects around bamboo as plant and material. Oscar shared his childhood with his brother Fernando, who later was an architect as well, and was with his brother Fabian in his last days in Bogota. After high school, Oscar moved to Bogota where he studied Architecture, gaining his diploma on 1964. Oscar worked in the Colombia National University, teaching in the architecture faculty for 18 years, and was the Founder and Director of the Bamboo Research Center in Colombia. Oscar worked as a consultant for the United Nations in programs related with prebuilt bamboo houses in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Costa Rica. Oscar was a Senior Draftsman for Parsons Jurden in Washington (1964 to 1966) and as an Architectural Designer and Senior Draftsman for Bechtel in New York (1967 to 1969). Oscar participated as speaker at several seminars, symposiums and conferences related to bamboo around the world. Oscar was offered international consulting services to the Smithsonian Institute USA (1976), the United Nations for Ecuador (1983), and for Costa Rica (1985).
